A Brief History of GenieDB
|
|
So, how and why was the Genie conjured? For over a decade, our team
built many innovative web apps, frameworks and enterprise software
services, for high techs, Fortune 500′s and Government, frequently
facing the pain and cost of big-data or diverse-data issues. GenieDB
began as a coffee table discussion in late 2007 amongst our engineers to
solve a client’s challenge – to have a 30 node read-write cluster of
MySQL servers spanning two continents – running on commodity hardware,
with neither replication lag nor the benefit of a billion dollar budget.
Dozens
of alternative databases and eventual consistency ‘NoSQL’ cloud
datastores exist. We looked at every one, but none enjoyed the expected
data consistency, availability and partition tolerance that enterprise
software generally demands. Faced with a seemingly impossible challenge,
GenieDB emerged: A layered ‘C+AP architecture’ that mirrors the way the
brain creates an immediate, globally consistent view of our senses
arriving in unique locations at different times in the Thalamus,
parallel to committing the experience to permanent storage, in multiple
places, long after we’ve reacted to the deluge of initial sensory
‘updates’.
At first, starting as an R&D project in London, we
were known only to academics and analysts. In 2010 we became the
youngest company to speak at Under the Radar and Oracle Open World. Two
years on and we are established in both US and Europe having attracted
an exceptional team who have built some of the most innovated
distrubuted database techonologies and businesses of the last decade.
Today,
GenieDB is focused on invisibly shrink-wrapping its technology into
products that power all the commonest software relied upon by enterprise
– from MySQL powered Joomla, Drupal and Worpress to Powa, Hybris and
SAP. We help you run these apps as though they were rewritten for
geodiverse replication and scale out, whether on your own
infrastructure, in the Cloud, or both. GenieDB is being integrated by
high-tech software and platform vendors building out cloud services, by
ISP’s to offer zero-admin, geo-diverse, scalable CMS and CRM Software as
a Service used today by tens of millions of companies worldwide. Even
innovative hardware manufactures moving ‘up the stack’ are building
GenieDB into their ultra-efficient disributed database appliances. These
products make migrating to the cloud far more feasible, make life
easier for developers and DBAs, and businesses run more efficiently,
with less risk and greater profit. Just as the Cloud intended!
GenieDB
is changing the way we think about building and migrating to widely
distributed, scalable platforms, offering the best of both SQL and NoSQL
worlds, for software vendors and ISPs, on conventional infrastructure
and the Cloud.
